Ephesians 4:30 – Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Why is this an important advice? Because we are sealed by Him for the day of redemption. A seal is to attest authenticity and authority; it is to imprint the likeness; it is to set as security. Therefore, “Grieve not, then, that Spirit upon whom you are so dependent: He is your credentials as a Christian; He is your life as a believer.” (C. H. Spurgeon.)
In Eph 4:25-31, Paul illustrates how we can keep from grieving the Spirit: avoid unwholesome talks, rid yourself of bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, and slander. The Holy Spirit is grieved by sin, especially sin of the tongue.
James 3:6 – And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
Unless we recognize the purpose of the Holy Spirit is to make us like God; we will brush aside the work of the Holy Spirit in us. The Spirit of truth can never approve that which is false; He will not allow that which is impure to remain in us. To live victoriously in this fallen world, the only hope is by continually yielding to the control of the Holy Spirit. We do so by being obedient to His prompting and enabling.
The Holy Spirit whom Jesus has given dwells within us, and He is the seal of our redemption. The Lord Jesus shall come for each of us who is being prepared and molded to the stature of Christ’s likeness.
All manifestations of the Holy Spirit whether tongues, prophesy, miraculous works and gifts are for now. The only thing that remains is the evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. There is a possibility of our resisting against His work in us. Therefore, do not grieve the Holy Spirit!
