Life in the Spirit

Eph 4:1-3

I…. beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Paul exhorts us to walk worthy of the calling with which we are all called (life in the Spirit). Jesus has shown us how to live this kind of life. ‘Learn of me,’ he said, ‘for I am meek and lowly.’ Life in the Spirit is to walk in humility, meekness, patience, enduring one another in love and guarding the unity of the Spirit.

Many thought ‘life in the Spirit’ is to pursue the power gifts of the Holy Spirit. Too often people misuse the gifts to attain their own ‘glorious’ image. Boasting and looking down on others who are ‘not spiritual’ because they have a less prominent gift. To correct such notion, Paul starts with the most essential ingredient to release the gifts of the Holy Spirit–unity of the Spirit.

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard, the beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, descending upon the mountains of Zion…. (Ps 133:1-3).

Unity among God’s people is compared to oil and dew. It is likened to the anointing oil poured upon Aaron and to the dew of Hermon that fell upon the mountains of Zion. This oil ran down through Aaron’s hair, his beard, down the edge of his garments. This anointing is God’s empowering grace, not just for Aaron but for all God’s people. The Lord of Heaven has in store this anointing for every member of His body when they choose to walk in the unity of the Spirit. All will be anointed, big or small.

Unity is of the Holy Spirit. It is not something we work to achieve. We are to recognize, treasure and guard it as a precious jewel. When God’s people act in obedience, an anointing will be released from Heaven. Unity will cause God’s power to be released through God’s people. It will usher in the glory of Christ through the manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom of God will be among us!

The Devil knows it and he is doing his level best to disrupt the unity in the body of Christ.
